American tennis star Coco Gauff was forced to retire from her third-round match at the BNP Paribas Open after suffering a concerning left arm injury while facing rising Filipina player Alexandra Eala.
The match ended abruptly on Sunday night at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden with Eala leading 6-2, 2-0, sending the 20-year-old Filipina into the round of 16 of the prestigious tournament.
Sudden Injury Forces Retirement
Gauff revealed after the match that she first felt discomfort early in the opening set.
“It felt like a firework was going off inside of my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire,” Gauff said.
The American took a medical timeout late in the first set as the pain worsened.
She returned to the court with her lower left arm heavily strapped, but the issue continued to escalate and ultimately forced her to stop the match early in the second set.

Gauff described the experience as alarming.
“It was a scary feeling,” she added, explaining that the pain intensified even during shots where she was not actively using the arm. MRI Planned to Determine Cause
The 2023 US Open champion said she will undergo an MRI to determine the exact nature of the injury.
“We’re going to get an MRI and see what’s going on. The good news is they don’t think it’s going to be a long-term type of situation, so I should be fine for Miami.”
According to Gauff, the sensation may be nerve-related, although doctors will confirm after further testing.
Rare Career Retirement
The retirement marked only the second time in Gauff’s professional career that she has withdrawn from a match mid-contest. Her previous retirement came at the 2022 Cincinnati Open against Marie Bouzkova due to an ankle injury.
Alexandra Eala Advances
For Alexandra Eala, the unexpected ending secured one of the biggest results of her young career. The Filipina star applauded Gauff as she left the court and later praised her opponent.
“Thank you, Coco, for being an amazing competitor and an amazing role model,” Eala said after the match. “I really hope that everything is well and you will recover soon.”
The victory sends Eala into the Round of 16 at Indian Wells, continuing a breakthrough run at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament.
Eyes on the Miami Open
Despite the scare, Gauff expressed optimism about her recovery timeline and hopes to return soon during the Sunshine Double, which continues with the upcoming Miami Open.
The tournament in Florida begins later this month and could mark Gauff’s next appearance if medical tests confirm the injury is not serious.
